Compositions and methods for preventing and treating disease are provided. The functionalized, substituted naphthalenes display useful properties including liquid crystals and fluorescence properties, such as solvatochromatic fluorescence, with high quantum yields, Stoke’s shift, and show emission maxima that are significantly red-shifted. These novel pixels are processed using contiguous region detection and grouped into foreground figures. The pump laser provides approximately 15 mW optical power in the NIR-VIS.
