A symmetric object in an image is identified by converting an edge map of the acquired image into a binary image map including binary pixel values; dividing the binary image map within a scanning window into multiple bins; summing binary pixel values in each bin; and identifying the symmetric object based at least in part on the summed binary pixel values in the bins. The tool is, in one aspect, a goniometer used for determining the angle of heel-toe taper when preparing a horse’s hoof to receive a shoe. This inventive device will reduce the cost of metal solutions as well.
