A system is disclosed for a plate-shaped filter element in a gas filter housing. Nitrogen is included in at least one of the following places: i) in the first oxide silicon film and in a vicinity of the silicon carbide substrate, and ii) in an interface between the silicon carbide substrate and the first oxide silicon film. The gas generator requires no special preheat apparatus or special sequencing to meet start-up requirements, enabling a fast overall response time.
