To allow for a larger selection of viewpoints for the viewer during the reproduction of 3D image contents, it is proposed to compute the two stereoscopic images from the image signals of recording cameras, which record images of an object to be reproduced from different viewpoints of a monoscopic position. That is achieved by taking into account whether the reference pictures in the decoded picture buffer are long-term reference pictures or short-term reference pictures when determining how they should be marked when the information of the reference picture set is received.
