The present invention, takes advantage of the properties of quadrature signals to achieve precise quadrature alignment in a simple fashion. The system utilizes an adjustable periodic grating which induces mode coupling of predetermined frequencies of light propagating in the waveguide. There is no need to attach discrete components to a circuit board.
