A method of assaying work of an earth boring bit of a given size and design including establishing characteristics of the bit of given size and design. This is particularly applicable to indication of a dual transfer mode handover command. In one embodiment, the apparatus is an ion chromatograph and may be used to analyze ions at concentrations as low as about 1 to about 500 parts per trillion.
