There is disclosed a coating material formulation for layering a plurality of electrodes to provide a substrate for the electrochemical synthesis of organic oligomers. The first step in this process is to fabricate the underlying base structure and deposit an optical structure thereon. The invention is useful for the expression and screening for a large variety of proteins and protein complexes, including human proteins.
