An ink cartridge includes an ink egress snout from which an ink supply is discharged from the ink cartridge, and a collar that mates with the snout and can be arranged in any one of a number of allowable orientations to provide an identification of the ink supply. The one or more presence indicators indicate presence information. This allows a sensing device placed in an operative position relative to the information to sense at least some of the coded data and generate indicating data using the sensed coded data.
