A surgical instrument for insertion of an interbody fusion implant between adjacent vertebral bodies. Preferably adjacent pairs of strips are linked to form a strip of \u201cV\u201d cross section. Both of the functional components are connected between a pair of electrical connections provided by the connector and arranged such that at least one of the functional components is selectively energised in response to a change in the relative polarities of the two electrical connections.
