The process includes contacting a gamma alumina catalyst support material with a first solution containing a compound containing an element selected from the group consisting of yttrium, niobium, molybdenum, tin, antimony and mixtures thereof to obtain a modified catalyst support material. This design may provide advantages over the existing technology by miniaturizing the sensing element to provide potentially faster sensor light off times and thereby reduce undesired exhaust gas emissions.
